First study (EVER) on C-section scar mobilization!

That's right! Did you know that up until now we didn't have any studies on C-section scar mobilization?!

CRAZY especially considering its the go-to rehab strategy after Cesarean. This was a pre-post study design (no control group) that shows some initial thoughts on mechanical properties that change after completing scar mobilization.

You can check out the study here.

Walking EARLY helps with healing!

Walking early after a C-section can help to promote circulation and blood flow to the incision area. Here are some benefits of walking:

  • Increased blood flow, which can help to accelerate healing and reduce the risk of infection

  • Prevent complications such as blood clots by keeping the blood flowing

  • Release endorphins, natural painkillers, which can help to reduce discomfort

  • Strengthen the muscles around the incision site and reduce pain

  • Prevent constipation by stimulating the bowels and promoting regular bowel movements

It's important to follow the advice of a healthcare provider and gradually increase activity levels as the body heals.

What kind of pain can
C-Sections cause years after surgery?

Scar tissue can cause discomfort, pain, and even restrict movement, making daily activities difficult. Adhesions can form, which are bands of tissue that can stick to organs, nerves, and blood vessels, causing further pain and complications, including chronic pain, infection, and even reproductive issues. Treating the scar and reducing adhesions can help to alleviate these symptoms and improve overall quality of life.

In addition to physical discomfort, cesarean scars can also have an emotional impact. By treating the scar and addressing any related emotional concerns, women can feel more confident and positive about their bodies and their recovery.

How can Physical Therapists help?

Physical therapists can use a variety of techniques to treat C-section pain and promote healing. Here are some examples:

  1. MANUAL THERAPY
Physical therapists may use hands-on techniques to manipulate the soft tissue around the C-section scar, including the muscles, fascia, and nerves. This can help to reduce pain and improve mobility.

  2. EXERCISE THERAPY
Physical therapists can develop customized exercise programs to strengthen the muscles around the C-section scar and improve overall function. These exercises may include pelvic floor exercises, core strengthening exercises, and stretches.

  3. MODALITIES
Physical therapists may use various modalities such as heat, cold, electrical stimulation, and dry needling to manage pain, inflammation, and promote healing.

  4. EDUCATION & ADVICE
Physical therapists can provide education on proper body mechanics and posture to avoid strain and promote appropriate mobility on the C-section scar. They can also advise on activities that should be modified during recovery.

Overall, physical therapy can play a crucial role in managing C-section pain and promoting healing. Working with a physical therapist can help women regain strength, mobility, and function, while reducing the risk of long-term complications.
