Facts about neck pain

1. Manual therapy alone and exercise alone did not get good results for eradication of neck pain

but the combination of the two resulted in 42% having 100% reduction in cervical pain and 81% having 50% reduction in cervical pain.

2. Neck pain is very common

Neck pain spares no gender, culture, geographic region. Risk increases with age and once you have one incident of neck pain you are way more likely to have recurrent episodes.

3. Studies conducted found significant stability issues

By injecting the upper trap muscle with saline to create a state of pain in one shoulder/neck resulted in marked decrease in strength of deep cervical neck flexors as well as the strength of the SCM on that side. This indicates that a single episode of neck pain can significantly inhibit the stability around your neck, further altering your movement patterns and perpetuating ongoing neck pain.

4. Chin nod exercises increase abilities

Cranio-cervical flexion exercise induces a superior immediate hypoalgesic effect on head and neck pain. Doing chin nod exercises resulted in increased ability to perform cervical rotation due to the activation of postural muscle motor control.

5. The first 3 months

If you do cervical exercises in the first 3 months after injury you can prevent fatty infiltration into the muscle tissues.

6. Recurrence of neck pain is common

Not to worry if you have self management techniques.

Self-management has three elements

  1. A home program paralleling formal clinic treatment

  2. A maintenance program and a relapse program

  3. Prevention program
