What is Blood Flow Restriction Training?

There has been a lot of hype recently regarding a new method for weight training and for good reason. Blood flow restriction training, also known as BFR is a research-backed resistance training technique that aids in building muscle strength and hypertrophy with lower weight.

Pressure cuffs, similar to those used when taking your blood pressure, are applied to the limb and are pumped up to individualized pressures. The cuff restricts some, but not all of the blood flowing to that limb. This technique allows your muscles to train in the “anaerobic zone” more efficiently. BFR can also be coupled with aerobic training to improve aerobic capacity and endurance.

Because BFR allows for strengthening at lower loads, patients are able to train without pain and see similar if not improved effects on strength and muscle size. Physical therapists with additional training can safely and effectively help you use BFR in recovery from a wide variety of surgery and injuries.
